After receiving a lavish upbringing and training, he embarked on a military career at the age of 15. In 1506 he was admitted to the Grand Council (Maggior Consiglio) of his hometown. He also quickly made his career as an officer; In the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Italian wars\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italienische_Kriege#Gro%C3%9Fer_Venezianerkrieg\"><span>Great Venetian War<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0(1508\u20131511) between the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Republic of Venice\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republik_Venedig\"><span>Republic of Venice<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"League of Cambrai\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liga_von_Cambrai\"><span>League of Cambrai,<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0he rose to the rank of\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"General\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General\"><span>general<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0. As commander of the fortress of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"new\" title=\"Castelnuovo di Quero (page not available)\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Castelnuovo_di_Quero&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\"><span>Castelnuovo di Quero,<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0he had to bow to French superiority in 1511 and was taken prisoner of war.\u00a0<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hieronymus_%C3%84miliani#cite_note-1\"><span>[1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0That is why he is often seen in pictures with a chain. According to legend, the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Mary (Mother of Jesus)\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maria_(Mutter_Jesu)\"><span>Virgin Mary<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0appeared to him in the dungeon and gave him a key to open the shackles. He also founded several orphanages where children who had lost their parents in the war found shelter.\u00a0<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hieronymus_%C3%84miliani#cite_note-2\"><span>[2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0In the following years, at the request of the local bishops, he expanded his activities to\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Milan\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mailand\"><span>Milan<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Pavia\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pavia\"><span>Pavia<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Verona\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verona\"><span>Verona<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0.\u00a0<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hieronymus_%C3%84miliani#cite_note-3\"><span>[3]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0Hieronymus \u00c4miliani remained a layman throughout his life. Pope John Paul II described him as a \u201clayman who inspires laypeople.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hieronymus_%C3%84miliani#cite_note-4\"><span>[4]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>When there was a famine in Venice in 1528, which was exacerbated by an\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"History of the plague\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geschichte_der_Pest\"><span>epidemic of plague<\/span><\/a><span>, Jerome gathered young men to help the hungry, sick and dying. In 1531 Jerome finally left his father&#8217;s house. He and two of his companions, the priests Alessandro Besozzi (Latinized: Besuzius) and Agostino Barili, decided to write a\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Common life\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vita_communis\"><span>Vita communis<\/span><\/a><span> . In 1532 a community arose in Bergamo under the leadership of Agostino Barili, and in 1534 a community arose in Somasca under the leadership of Hieronymus.
