As a young man, he had a strong penchant for solitude and silent prayer. At the age of 16, he saw in a vision a tall tower at the spot in Ranft where he later built his <a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.869766,8.271281&amp;z=17\">hermitage<\/a>. In 1446, at the age of about 29, Nicholas married the fourteen-year-old Dorothea Wyss, then built a new\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.871976,8.269593&amp;z=17\">house<\/a>\u00a0on the Fl\u00fceli and became the father of five boys and five girls. In 1457 he took legal action against the\u00a0increase in church taxes demanded by the priest of\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.867878,8.239753&amp;z=17\">Sachseln, and in 1459 he rose to the rank of councillor in <\/a><a class=\"Ort5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/Gkml.html?k=Obwalden.kml\">Obwalden<\/a>\u00a0and judge of his community. He was respected for his sense of justice and his wisdom; he resisted higher political tasks. In 1460 he was again involved as a soldier in the campaign against\u00a0<a class=\"Ort5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/Gkml.html?k=Thurgau.kml\">Thurgau<\/a>; according to tradition, he prevented the burning of the\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.691371,8.735992&amp;z=17\">Katharinental<\/a>\u00a0monastery in Diessenhofen. Throughout all these years, however, he never lost his secret longing for the life of a hermit. My beloved wife and the company of my children became a burden to me<\/q>. He suffered from fits; sometimes he would lean against the wall with his eyes rolling back, his mouth open and a distorted expression on his face, and would no longer be responsive. On the advice of a priest, he devoted himself more to contemplating the suffering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/BiographienJ\/Jesus_Christus.htm\">of Christ<\/a>; finally, with the express consent of his wife and children, which he regarded as\u00a0<q>a great grace from God<\/q>, he decided to go abroad. On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/BiographienG\/Gallus.html\">St. Gall&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0Day in October 1467, Nicholas left his family &#8211; the youngest child was just one year old &#8211; and resigned from all political offices. He first made his way to a mystical brotherhood in\u00a0<a class=\"Ort\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.562859,7.580566&amp;z=12\">Basel<\/a>, but shortly before reaching his destination, he felt called back to <a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.382920,7.748423&amp;z=17\">Waldenburg<\/a> by three visions: mystical figures blocked his way, then he saw the whole city bathed in blood red and the following night a beam of light fell on him, which gave him a stomach ache.<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"Bildlinks\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"karte\" style=\"border: 0px; cursor: url('..\/Tools\/zoomin.cur'), zoom-in;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Fotos\/Nikolaus_von_Fluee3.jpg\" alt=\"The \u201cMiracle of Waldenburg\u201d\" width=\"396\" height=\"250\" \/>\n<figcaption title=\"http:\/\/www.onz.ch\/artikel\/100708\/\">The\u00a0<q>Miracle of\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.382920,7.748423&amp;z=17\">Waldenburg<\/a><\/q>\u00a0<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nicholas realized that his flight to\u00a0<a class=\"Ort\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.562859,7.580566&amp;z=12\">Basel<\/a> was not God&#8217;s will, but he did not dare to return home and first went to the\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.807896,8.272942&amp;z=17\">Alpe Chlisterli<\/a>\u00a0in the Melchtal, some distance from his hometown.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Bildrechts\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"karte\" style=\"border: 0px; cursor: url('..\/Tools\/zoomin.cur'), zoom-in;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Fotos\/Nikolaus_von_Fluee10.jpg\" alt=\"The chapel built in Nicholas' honour on the Alpe Chlisterli\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/>\n<figcaption title=\"http:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC3QB0J_pfingstmontagstradition-chlisterli?guid=caf9c264-0cd9-4b48-ad48-3f6098c16e3a\">The chapel was built in Nicholas&#8217; honor on the <a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.807896,8.272942&amp;z=17\">Alpe Chlisterli.<\/a><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When he was found by hunters after eight days, Nicholas finally went to the place that he had seen in a vision as his hermitage since childhood: the\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.869766,8.271281&amp;z=17\">Ranft Gorge<\/a>, just a few minutes from his family\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.871976,8.269593&amp;z=17\">home<\/a>\u00a0on the Fl\u00fceli. He spent his first winter there in a hut made of branches and leaves. The following summer, farmers from Fl\u00fceli built the cell and chapel for Nicholas as forced labor. When he too began to fast strictly and became ill as a result, Nicholas warned him to stop. He slept on a board and used a stone as a pillow. Contemporaries described him as <q>sociable, communicative, comfortable, cheerful, and, above all, friendly<\/q>. It is said that he resisted the temptation of the devil, who threw him into a thorn bush. He was considered one of the greatest advisors and pastors, also for domestic and foreign politicians,\u00a0and was revered by the people as a\u00a0<q>living saint. In 1473, Archduke Sigmund of Austria sent his linen doctor to Nicholas and gave him rich gifts. In 1481, for the <\/q><q>Diet<\/q>\u00a0in\u00a0<a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.956642,8.366048&amp;z=17\">Stans<\/a>, he brokered peace between the Confederates, who had become divided after their surprise victory over\u00a0<a class=\"Ort5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/Gkml.html?k=Burgund.kml\">Burgundy<\/a> and were now threatening to go to war among themselves, using a message delivered by the priest. In this way, he saved the Confederacy, which at that time consisted of eight cantons. Since he had lived in <a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?46.869766,8.271281&amp;z=17\">Ranft<\/a>, he had always seen a star in the sky that was like him, so he thought it was him. To accommodate the influx of pilgrims, a lower chapel was constructed in 1501 near the original upper chapel. The same year, the canton of Obwalden commissioned the first biography of Nicholas. Initially dedicated to Theodor von Sitten, the church at Nicholas&#8217; grave site was rebuilt and expanded in 1459. Following his beatification in 1672, another new building was constructed.
