The Dominican Order is one of the great intellectual and spiritual orders of the Catholic Church\u2014officially the Order of Preachers<\/span>, in Latin\u00a0Ordo Praedicatorum<\/em>, which is why Dominicans sign their names O.P.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. The Beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It was founded by a Spanish priest named\u00a0Dominic de Guzm\u00e1n<\/span>\u00a0(1170-1221). Dominic was traveling through southern France in the early 1200s, where he encountered the Albigensian heresy. He was struck by how the heretical preachers lived in radical poverty and won people over, while Catholic preachers traveled like lords.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

His idea was simple and revolutionary: create an order of well-educated preachers who live like the poor they preach to, but who are as intellectually sharp as university professors.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pope Honorius III confirmed the Order in\u00a01216<\/span>. Dominic’s own motto became the Order’s program: to contemplate and to give to others the fruits of contemplation \u2014\u00a0contemplare et contemplata aliis tradere<\/em>.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

2. What makes a Dominican?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Four pillars hold up Dominican life to this day:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Prayer:<\/span>\u00a0Dominicans have a strong contemplative life. The Rosary, in fact, is traditionally linked to St. Dominic \u2014 tradition says the Virgin Mary gave it to him.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

2. Study:<\/span> This pursuit is the hallmark. Dominicans were sent to the new universities from the very beginning\u2014Paris, Bologna, and Oxford. Study is not vanity for them; it is a form of prayer and a requirement for preaching well. Their motto is Veritas \u2014 Truth<\/span>.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

3. Community:<\/span>\u00a0Unlike hermits, Dominicans always live, pray, and make decisions together. No monastery is independent; all are part of one Order.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

4. Preaching:<\/span>\u00a0Everything else is ordered toward this. It can be a homily, a lecture, a book, a work of art, or a conversation.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

3. The look<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You will recognize them by their habit: a white tunic with a white scapular, a leather belt with a rosary, and over it a black hooded cape \u2014 the\u00a0cappa<\/em>. That’s why in England they were called the\u00a0Black Friars\u2014white<\/span>\u00a0for purity and truth, black for penance.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

4. A huge family<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dominic didn’t just found friars. The Dominican family today has three branches:<\/strong><\/h2>\n
