In 596, he was sent to England on a mission together with forty monks.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>When Augustine and his monks reached\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?43.531772,5.446846&amp;z=17\"><span>Aix-en-Provence<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0, they were so horrified by the reports about the wild islanders in Britain that Augustine wanted to abandon the venture and return to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?41.902201,12.455224&amp;z=17\"><span>Rome<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0. But the Pope insisted on his orders, made Augustine abbot and gave him letters of recommendation to the Frankish princes and bishops, in which he asked them to take part in and support the mission. With that, Augustine and around 40 companions set out for the second time in the spring of 597. Their route took them &#8211; probably from the Roman\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?41.749726,12.285513&amp;z=17\"><span>port<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0of Ostia across the sea &#8211; to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?43.295319,5.373868&amp;z=17\"><span>the port<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0of Marseille, then they went ashore along the Rh\u00f4ne via\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?45.524170,4.872606&amp;z=17\"><span>Vienne<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?47.392294,0.688851&amp;z=12\"><span>Tours , where they wanted to ask\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/BiographienM\/Martin_von_Tours.htm\"><span>Martin<\/span><\/a><span> &#8216;s blessing for their mission at his grave. Contrary to reports, Augustine and his companions found a flourishing peasant civilization in southern England. The Anglo-Saxons formed a warrior society under their chiefs or petty kings, lived in large wooden houses in which they ate and drank in abundance, were armed with magnificent knives and swords &#8211; from which they derived their name Saxons, Saxon<\/span><span>\u00a0Bertha, a granddaughter of King Clovis in France, the wife of King\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/BiographienE\/Ethelbert_von_Kent.htm\"><span>Ethelbert<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0of Kent, was already a Christian. The Roman monks were warmly received by Ethelbert, the King of Kent liked Augustine, he was allowed to teach and preach in southern England and was assigned what is now\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"Ort\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/Orte\/GKarte.html?51.28189,1.080437&amp;z=12\"><span>Canterbury<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0as a bishop&#8217;s seat. On June 2, 597, the king was baptized himself. The queen made her court chapel available to the missionaries: St.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heiligenlexikon.de\/BiographienM\/Martin_von_Tours.htm\"><span>Martin&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0Church, located in the east of Canterbury, of whose foundations there are still remains.
