There are many sins; they have different degrees and varieties. Their enumeration would fill an entire book of moral theology. Nevertheless, spiritual authors ask what the common basis of all vices is. They answer unanimously: egoism, an unnatural focus on one’s own interests, and a lack of attention to others. The prodigal son had everything, but not with his father and brother. He longed to use the property alone, independently, and without regard for others. By doing so, he naturally severed his ties with others. The parable symbolically expresses this idea through his decision to travel to a distant country. His request does not seem strange to us; after all, we encounter something similar every day. We ourselves also constantly experience two conflicting desires. One day, we would like to share things with others, talk to them, and live with them. But immediately, something urges us to go where no one knows us, to hide what we have, and to close ourselves off, reflecting a deep-seated fear of vulnerability and the consequences of exposure. According to V. Solovyov, these two tendencies represent life and death. Sin means standing on the path that leads to death. Life is constant sharing; death is the end of relationships.

He spent everything, and hunger set in. ● It is incredible how long certain organisms have, how they can heal injuries, how they survive difficult conditions. Even healthy people have strong vitality. Such people survived concentration camps and prisons and happily returned home. However, spiritual life also embodies strong vitality. Its manifestation is spiritual hunger, dissatisfaction with a poorly chosen life. However, there are different types of dissatisfaction. Someone is dissatisfied with the food and, therefore, wants to change the cuisine. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes not. Another is dissatisfied with the work he does, so he looks for a new job. We are often dissatisfied with the weather, but in that case, we cannot do anything. Dissatisfaction with lives others lead us to break human relationships, even among friends and even within the family. Therefore, dissatisfaction is, generally speaking, a destructive, disturbing element in life. Only one dissatisfaction has a fundamentally positive value: being dissatisfied with oneself leads us to correct our own lives. The Gospel calls it conversion and repentance and attributes lives to its miraculous power.

I will arise and go to my father. ● The division between people begins with egoism. On the contrary, the beginning of a union is trust. Secrets, however, are possible only between living individuals. We cannot trust the laws of nature. We must know how to use or avoid them. Whoever breaks a dam must flee from the water that is spilling. Even state laws will fall hard on those who have sinned against them if they do not know how to avoid and flee, leading to severe penalties such as fines or imprisonment. God, on the other hand, appears in the Bible as a father. He can then forgive. Thus, a strange thing happens. The sinner who has converted professes faith in God in a better way than the righteous. He who has not sinned easily recognizes that God is the first cause and law of the world, the judge who justly rewards good and punishes evil. But he who prays, “God, forgive me, a sinner,” recites the complete creed. He believes that God is a merciful Father who repays good for evil and forgives. By confessing faith, we unite with God; trust gives eternal life. Therefore, even he who asks for mercy receives a share in eternal life and its happiness again, despite being a son of death through sin.

Give me my share of the property.
