\u201cForgive from Your Heart\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dear brothers and sisters,<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today\u2019s Gospel speaks of one of Christianity\u2019s most beautiful yet most difficult demands: forgiveness.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Peter comes to Jesus with a very practical question: \u201cLord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?\u201d Peter probably thinks that seven times is already very generous. But Jesus answers, “Not\u00a0seven times, but seventy-seven times.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jesus is not giving us a number to count. He is saying: Do not put a limit on forgiveness.”<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. We live because God forgives us<\/h2>\n

To explain this, Jesus tells the parable of a king and his servant. The servant owes the king an enormous debt\u2014so enormous that he could never repay it. He falls before the king and begs, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you back in full.\u201d<\/h2>\n

The king knows that this promise is unrealistic. The servant cannot repay the debt. Yet something unexpected happens: the king is moved with compassion and forgives the entire debt.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This image reflects our relationship with God.<\/h2>\n

We often reflect on our good deeds, prayers, sacrifices, and faithfulness. But before all these things stands one fundamental truth: Christian life begins not with what we do for God, but with what God has done for us.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We are people who have been forgiven.<\/h2>\n

Every time we sincerely say, \u201cLord, have mercy,\u201d God does not humiliate us with our past. He offers us a new beginning. This is especially visible in the sacrament of Reconciliation. We come before God with our sins, and we leave with our debt forgiven.<\/h2>\n

2. The forgiven servant refuses to forgive<\/h2>\n

But then the parable takes a disturbing turn.<\/h2>\n

The servant who has just been forgiven an enormous debt meets another servant who owes him a much smaller amount. He grabs him by the throat and says: \u201cPay what you owe.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The second servant even uses almost the same words that the first servant had used before the king: \u201cHave patience with me, and I will pay you back.\u201d<\/h2>\n

But there is no mercy.<\/h2>\n

The first servant received compassion, but he did not learn it. He experienced mercy, but mercy did not enter his heart.<\/h2>\n

And here Jesus places a mirror before us.<\/h2>\n

We pray: \u201cForgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

But sometimes we want two different standards: unlimited mercy for ourselves and strict justice for others.<\/h2>\n

When I fail, I want people to understand my circumstances. When someone else fails, I judge him.<\/h2>\n

When I hurt someone, I want another chance. When someone hurts me, I remember it for years.<\/h2>\n

When I sin, I trust in God’s mercy. But when another person sins against me, I may say, \u201cI will never forgive him.\u201d<\/h2>\n

3. Forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened<\/h2>\n

Forgiveness is difficult because wounds can be real and deep. A careless word can hurt us. Betrayal can change a relationship. Injustice can leave consequences for many years.<\/h2>\n

Jesus does not say that evil is unimportant.<\/h2>\n

Forgiveness does not mean saying, \u201cWhat you did was acceptable.\u201d It does not mean that we must immediately trust someone who has repeatedly betrayed our trust. It does not mean that justice is excluded.<\/h2>\n

Forgiveness means something deeper: I refuse to allow the evil done to me to become the master of my heart.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As long as I nourish hatred, the person who hurt me continues to have power over me. I carry that person with me\u2014in my thoughts, in my anger, sometimes even in my prayers.<\/h2>\n

Forgiveness begins when I place the person and the wound into God’s hands and say:<\/h2>\n

\u201cLord, I cannot change what happened. I cannot change this person. Perhaps I cannot even change my feelings today. But I do not want hatred to rule my heart. Give me the grace to forgive.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Sometimes forgiveness happens quickly. Sometimes it is a long spiritual journey. We may have to decide to forgive again and again.<\/h2>\n

4. Remember how much you have been forgiven.<\/h2>\n

This parable offers a simple spiritual lesson: the person who remembers God’s mercy finds it easier to show mercy.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The servant became merciless because he seems to have forgotten almost immediately what the king had done for him.<\/h2>\n

The same danger exists for us.<\/h2>\n

When we forget our weaknesses, we become severe with others. When we remember how patient God has been with us, we become more patient with our neighbor.<\/h2>\n

Perhaps there is someone in our life whom we find difficult to forgive. Jesus does not ask us first to look at that person’s sins. He asks us to look at the King\u2014to look at God\u2014and remember the enormous mercy we ourselves have received.<\/h2>\n

5. \u201cForgive your brother from your heart.”<\/h2>\n

At the end of the Gospel, Jesus uses an important expression: \u201cforgive your brother from your heart.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Christian forgiveness is more than polite words. It transforms the heart.<\/h2>\n

We may still remember the wound. We may still feel pain. But we no longer desire revenge. We no longer rejoice when something bad happens to the person who hurt us. Gradually, with God’s grace, we become able even to pray for that person.<\/h2>\n

That is difficult. But that is the freedom Christ offers us.<\/h2>\n

Dear brothers and sisters, Perhaps today we should ask ourselves two questions:<\/h2>\n

Whom do I need to forgive? And from whom do I need to ask forgiveness? <\/strong>We are about to celebrate the Eucharist. We come before the Lord not because we are perfect, but because we need His mercy. The Christ who gave His life on the Cross prayed for those who crucified Him: \u201cFather, forgive them.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

May He give us the same merciful heart.<\/h2>\n

And whenever forgiveness seems impossible, let us remember the servant standing before the king. We too stand before God with empty hands. We have received mercy that we could never earn.<\/h2>\n

Therefore, having been forgiven much, let us also forgive from the heart.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Amen.<\/p>\n
